  • The most fun you could have in Bolivia

I lived in La Paz, Bolivia for two months in 2006 and was lucky enough to be there when this film was released. It was a smash in Bolivia breaking all records for domestic films. I speak Spanish well, and although there was a lot of Bolivia slang, understood most of it. Much of the really specific youth slang comes up on the screen with a dictionary definition for the older generations. After seeing it I decided it was so funny that my boyfriend who did not speak much Spanish at all had to see it (obviously without subtitles unfortunately for him) and he completely understood what was going on. The physical comedy is as good as what's said and a couple of parts are actually in English with Spanish subtitles. It is basically a disaster road trip drug smuggling llama-murdering movie (one of those!). It is rough and ready with fantastic acting (especially Domi and the narrator) and characters despite the obvious lack of budget. This film could not have come at a better time for Bolivia and it deserves international recognition. It shows the whole country, from Altiplano to amazon that will surprise even educated viewers with what a diverse country Bolivia is. It also highlights the very real tensions between the two sides of the country, the Collas (andean mountainous people) and the Cambas (people from the lowlands and amazon) many of whom want regional autonomy from the West. It also brings to our attention problems with international drug smuggling and has some great anti-US digs. Bellot (who appears in the movie as a Hare Krishna) is a very self-assured director who really raises the bar for this very tired (well, in Hollywood anyway)road trip genre with a great pace, lots of music and colours to keep even the MTV generation satisfied. The scene with Mr. Bolivia and the little white llama (of the title) is one of my favourite in Film history. I really really hope that: a) this director gets more money to make an even better follow-up b) Who Killed the Little White Llama gets an international release with subtitles, even if it is only shown at Latin American Film Festivals.

  • Very well done

Very well done, I spent two years in Bolivia and many of the problems and issues are raised in a very funny and comical way without focusing on one group. It did not matter what group you were the Americans, Bolivians(Cambas, collas) or European. The narrator does a very good job explaining the history so if you have not been to Bolivia you will understand the situation. There is substantial use of different filming techniques. There are different vantage points seen and multiple camera shots. A lot of Bolivian slang making it difficult for the non-Bolivian to understand but the director includes brief written definitions on the screen. However since the movie was subtitled in English sometimes the two overlapped. I hope that this will be available on DVD soon, it is currently at all the Latin American Festivals

  • Making up French subtitles myself ! Nearly done !!!

    sfayoux2011-09-02

This is one of the best and funniest movie I've seen in the way it really shows up the Culture of Bolivia ! Very rare are movies who do not lie about the politics of their own country... I have never been to Bolivia, although speaking Spanish rather well, but this movie is a MUST SEE !, a real special one ! very dense in action and filming effects, and you will end up buying airline tickets soon to visit this country I guess... LOL ! This might be the best advertisement for Bolivia up to now ! Well done guys ! It's a real pity to only find the movie with English subtitles. And hard ones ! Which means you can't get rid of them !!! Also there are not that appropriate and not really well synchronized... When you understand Spanish this is a real pain !!! Hence English speakers will understand it but will surely loose a lot in its subtleties ! Indeed jokes are everywhere ! Spanish-Bolivian slang is crazy and sure it is not easy to get all the crunchy bits but I am trying to extract as much as I can from this great movie, and will maybe release the FRENCH SUBTITLES when I have finished !!! Please those who want French subtitles, encourage me ! If the Owner of the Movie wants to contact me, please do !!! I can not say my subtitles will be the best of the best but I think they are great, following as much as possible the 'fun spirit of the movie'...
