Meet the Wylers - a family unlike any other and way too much like your own! For a dozen years, James has served as both big brother and surrogate parent, trusting God for help in raising his three siblings - and hoping for a date some day! As youngest brother Bobby turns 16, everyone returns home to celebrate - and to finally find out how their parents' money will be divided. Andrea is hoping for more than her fair share, Dennis (make that 'The' Dennis) just needs enough to keep the anarchists at bay (don't ask), and nothing would please Bobby more than just to impress Liz, the new girl in school. Mix in a hidden stash of cash, an attractive lawyer, a troubled friend, and the infamous War Table, and you have a quirky story about family, faith, and friendship.
Bringing Up Bobby (2009) Reviews
Laugh out loud funny!
One of the funniest movies I've ever seen! Yes, it has some cheesy parts, but it is overall hilarious. There is a Christian/good moral theme, but it isn't pushy at all. It puts you to mind of "Napoleon Dynamite" meets "Dick Van Dyke". The story is about a family (three brothers and a sister) who are about tho find out the contents of their parents will after twelve years of waiting. The movie focuses on the oldest brother - James, and his role in helping raise his youngest brother - Bobby. The movie deals with selfishness, family, open communication, relationships, and character issues. One of the best moral themes of the movie is the love and acceptance of everyone. There is some small poking of fun at the goth culture in general and a poking of fun at the way many adults view Goths (i.e. a car salesman sees a goth kid on the lot and calls for security: "the circus is back in town"), but the movie depicts these as kids that simply need to be loved. This is not a deep movie, nor an action-packed movie, but it is light-hearted and sure to make you laugh!
Best Christian comedy on the market
This film is a delight to watch. The dark comedy and random humor are unexpected and unusual for the Christian film genre. A genre, I might add, which begs for more variety like that which 'Bobby' has to offer. For one thing, the characters are refreshingly unique. In particular it is commendable that Christians are portrayed not as upper-class mannequins of perfection, but as real people redeemed by grace alone. The ensemble cast also includes a plethora of notable characters, including the lovable drifter Dennis, played by Brian Morvant, who lights up the screen whenever he appears, and the impossibly meek brother-in-law Walter, who is never allowed to finish a sentence. It should be noted that this film is something of a love-letter to teenagers, so while it deals honestly with questions of identity, abuse, and what it means to be a Christian, there's also plenty of goofiness to lighten the mood. I have watched this film with numerous teenagers, including non-Christians, and it has succeeded each time in winning laughs - and fans. This film would be an excellent resource for youth pastors or college ministers looking for a creative way to share the gospel and spark discussion. It is clean, family-friendly, and in my opinion, hilarious! You will never be able to look at an attic fan the same way. If you don't like this film, "Y'all are crazy!"
Random and Unique -- Enjoy!
This movie definitely kept our interest all the way through. Twice we have happened upon it on TV while flipping through the channels and, both times, IT GRABBED US with its RANDOM and quirky, droll humor. (We are ages 14 to 60.) The expressions on people's faces alone were sometimes enough to make us laugh out loud. Never was this movie predictable. On top of being funny, occasionally it had some good, thought-provoking messages, as the people in it were encountering some of the many trials common to mankind. The oldest of 4 siblings (whose parents died 12 years ago) is trying to deal with some stressful family situations in a very loving and fair way. He is raising Bobby who is the youngest. We would like to see more movies like this one ~ a family drama that's silly, fun, AND meaningful as well. Good combo. We always appreciate a movie we can watch as a family and nobody ends up having to sit through embarrassing sex scenes or listen to needless profanity. "Bringing Up Bobby" leaves you wondering what happened to its cast of characters after it ended. A sequel, or something else by the same people who made this funky little flick might be nice, because they obviously have an off the wall sense of humor. Check it out. Even if you are not interested in its Christian message parts, you very likely will still get caught up in its somewhat unusual plot and characters, wanting to see what happens to this group of siblings who reunite for the reading of their dead parents' will.
Movie night at Mike's...
This movie is god awful. It's not funny. It's not edgy. And if anyone tells you otherwise they're either lying or are friends with the people that made it. As a former member of the Christan faith, I can honestly say that this movie further reinforced every reason why I left the church to begin with. It's full of ridiculous stereotypes, biases, and just about every stupid youth group cliché in existence. It's an unrealistic portrayal of what it's like to start thinking for one's self and forming one's own beliefs and opinions. The acting is horrendous, the costumes are ridiculous, and the script is way too preachy. I didn't laugh once, and neither will you...unless you're high. Which is the state of mind I suggest you be in if you ever decide to watch it. -Bobby
Preachy movie disguised in trailer as quirky comedy
This movie is boring and overly preachy. You have been warned. If you decide to watch this movie and are not high, looking for laughs, then it will be a painful experience. This movie is peppered all the way through with torturously overly simplistic, inane, moralistic dialogue. If you decide to sit through this film, it is your own mistake for having faith in a well-advertised but falsely-marketed film. I'm not sure how anyone could say that this film is "isn't pushy at all" because, frankly, anyone who's seen it would agree that it is. Bobby says that he is a man of god. He is happier because he knows who he is. I am very unhappy. But then maybe my unhappiness is a sign that god is giving me a chance, warning me about the hell i face if i persist in my heathen, agnostic ways. ... Nope. I'm just unhappy because I've wasted a part of my life watching a terrible movie that had a promising trailer that misled me into believing that Bringing Up Bobby might at least be entertaining and not preachy, despite its Christian origins. I was wrong. My faith has not been rewarded.
