When Ian Fairweather died in 1974 Australia lost an extraordinary artist and one of its greatest eccentrics. The reclusive, driven man left behind a body of paintings that today command huge prices at auction and hang on the walls of galleries around the world. At 60 years of age, Fairweather set off on a solo voyage across the sea on a hand-built, primitive raft. It is said that before the voyage he was a talented artist, but after-wards he became an extraordinary one. 'Fairweather Man' is the story of Ian Fairweather's life and travels, and also a journey deep into the heart and soul of the man and his work.

Fairweather Man (2009) Reviews
A fascinating and beautifully crafted portrait of an extraordinary man
Ian Fairweather is one of the most outstanding painters to have worked most of his life in Australia, and Aviva Ziegler has created an engrossing film of his life and work, despite the extremely limited visual record. Unhurried, thoughtful, unpretentious, intriguing. Although his paintings now command enormous prices, and are in virtually every major gallery in Australia, Ian Fairweather's life has been little known to the wider public, and the insights of this film into the trajectory of both his earlier peripatetic life and later hermit-like existence, and how these manifest in the works, is fascinating. This deserves to be widely available.
