In the 1940s, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor destroyed Americans' morale. The president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, decided to risk it all to bomb Tokyo, raising the public's hopes. B25 aircraft, led by U.S lieutenant colonel Jimmy Doolittle, departed from USS Hornet aircraft carrier ahead of schedule in violently stormy seas. After completing their mission, the pilot and crew had to bail out over the coast near Zhejiang, China due to fuel shortage from taking flack to their right wing. A young pilot, Jack Turner, was saved by a young local widow named Ying, who risked her life as she hid the injured American pilot in her house and helped him escape. Despite not being able to communicate verbally, they fell for each other. She gave her life for him during the escape. He rescued her daughter and brought her safely back to the USA.

A well acted war drama
While the box office is overrun by superhero films, it's refreshing to see a film that grounds itself more directly in humanity. "The Chinese Widow" is a beautifully shot, often endearing film that features particularly strong performances by Yifei Liu and Fangcong Li. It is a moving story that deals with incredible sacrifice and one that may bring the viewer to question their definition of heroism. If you want to see something more profound than a run-of-the-mill blockbuster, "The Chinese Widow" is definitely worth a watch.
Good Enough
The chinese widow seems like a promising movie. At first, the acting isn't that good and the CGI are awful but bareable. The scenes at the Chinese country side and the leading lady's life was interesting and eye catching. However, the story isn't as good as it should have been. Or, at least, the movie didn't excecute it well enough. The romance was quick and the ending even quicker. Actually, the ending was really bad.
Heartwarming & Heartbreaking
Monday is movie night at our house. My wife comes home with a new one from Red Box after work every Monday without fail and we have run the genre Gambit. Everything from meaningless junk to Best picture winners. We've laughed, we've cryed, we've cursed, we've applauded, we've been left wondering why and/or how we sat through many of them. I've often wanted to turn some off and forget I ever allowed myself to suffer through some of these flicks. Then "In harm's way" found it's way to our DVD player ... This movie will probably never be heralded with the greatest films ever made. But I can honestly say: I absolutely loved it. I never want to know what I'm about to watch. I don't want to know the genre, or any plot points. I want to be completely open minded and never have any premonition of the story. I hate the idea of "movie trailers" I think they are the absolute worst thing that can be done as far as movies go. I mean why watch a ballgame if you know who's going to win???... I will not ruin this experience for anyone else with spoilers. All I will say is: If a heart beats inside of you...watch this movie. Have a wonderful life too. God bless all and thanks for reading my review.
The brave and great women of war
At the Shanghai international film festival, the film was screened and the audience burst into tears. The film tells the story of a brave widow in China during the war. The director's shooting technique is exquisite, the plot is compact, the only inadequacy is the emotional development of two people too fast, but not obstruct this is a good movie, let people lament the importance of peace. Be thankful for the people who helped us in our difficulties
Good to watch
Far far better than anything released these days out of Hollywood. I find myself watching Hollywood movies less and less. This movie is good to watch, nothing extra ordinary but good. Acting is good story is reasonable, and attention to detail ok as well. In response to the reviewer who gave this movie one out of then without any reasons, instead advertised another typical war time propaganda movie from Hollywood in 1940's: stop watching substance and go to dumb down movies from Hollywood it suits you better! How can you call a typical war time popoganda movie from USA realistic!
