Perished (2011) Reviews
Well crafted zombie film
'Perished' is the story of a man trying to survive a zombie outbreak in suburban Australia. Trapped in a storage shed with limited supplies, he finds that in order to survive, not only must he escape, but he must also face his ultimate fear. This is a simple yet cleverly designed zombie film, which doesn't rely on much dialogue, in fact, there is very little. One undeniable fact is that this is definitely not a nonsensical zombie piece, but a mature and well crafted film, which mainly relies on the talents of the main actor, Wayne Davies, and directors/writers Radanovich and McCann. Although I don't consider myself a big fan of the zombie flick, I found myself engrossed in this film. Davies does a convincing job in portraying a broken man, vulnerable and desperate to survive. He almost reminds me of Viggo Mortensen in the dystopian film, 'The Road', with the exception of an Australian context. While 'Perished' encompasses the essentials of what you may expect from it's full length feature counterparts, the quality of the film making surpasses the efforts of some other film makers. Radanovich and McCann's understanding of the genre and technical mastery demonstrate their abilities as proficient film makers. The result is a well crafted production worthy of Hollywood but with a distinctive Australian presence. I'm giving this 8 out of 10.
well crafted
It is more than a correct zombie film. it reflects the tension and the fear and the entire vulnerability of an isolated man looking for survive. and it did it in admirable manner. because it not use only the realistic ingredients for a story about need to escape from a hostile circle but it gives a good support of reflection about solitude, solutions, insignificant joys, the final hope. all in inspired manner, with few real seductive scenes.
Not bad, not good either
"Perished" is a 16-minute short film set in a world overrun by zombies. We follow one man's fight for survival for almost the entire movie. I thought it was fairly generic for a movie of this genre and not too great a watch. then again, I am not too big on zombie films in general, so those who enjoy them will maybe like this one more than I did. the only thing memorable for me here is the way in which McCann (also an actor) and Radanovich (also an editor) ended the whole thing. Certainly some irony to it. Apart from that, I felt the film was unnecessary violent and I don't mean the way the protagonist kills zombies, but the way in which splattering brains or chainsaw action is included here. As a whole, I give this one a thumbs-down. Could have been better.
