Violent and thought-provoking
Some movies are hard to classify when they so brilliantly mashup genres. It's the case for Pink Zone. Yes it was made for no money (just like Nolan's Following or Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre for that matter), but the level of grittiness and its immersive quality makes us forget about it all. It must be the trippiest indie I've seen in a while. It will make you think about it for weeks to come. It's that strong. It has an even bigger meaning in today's state of the country, under President Trump. Violent and political, but also sometimes very poetical.
Intense little gem
This movie is definitely like no other first movie I've ever seen before. The representation of violence is so scary and visceral, it for sure is not for everyone. The changes the characters go through are compelling but the movie itself is divisive. Visually, we are somewhere between Kubrick, Lynch and Cuaron. I'm pretty sure 5 years from now, it will stay in history as a formidable auteur/genre masterpiece.
1
1 is too many stars . . . but it's the lowest possible rating here. Having said that, this film is so strange and disjointed, that any explanation would be pointless. There is an attempt at some sort of profound gender conflict statement wrapped up in a strange virus pathogen story, mapped into a high school classroom for essentially the entire film. The acting is so bad, that it's an embarrassment to high school acting classes everywhere (this is below even a sophomore college level production). The prevailing mystery here is, who actually spent money on this production??? I stuck with portions of it for comedy value (unintended, of course), but this pathetic production is below even that. What can I say . . . if you have absolutely nothing else in your life going on, well, it's your time to waste.
