A true story of inspiration and a love story
spoilers I must apologize to the Hong Kong audience for the spoiler citing because every single person here has taken to heart the story of Doctor Joanna Tse, `Hong Kong's daughter', who contracted SARS in a tireless battle against it. Audience elsewhere however may wish to watch the film as the story unfolds. I have never identified from a logical viewpoint with the concept of `gospel movie', as it is termed locally, because such billing has the implication that all other movies are automatically precluded from Christianity contents. The Miracle Box, however, while sometimes does get billed as a gospel movie, is a tender love story, with faith and inspiration as part and parcel of the whole thing. Whoever did the casting did an excellent job, particular with the two principals. While it seems illogical to make such a statement without the possibility of comparisons, I think Ada Choi is the best choice for the role of Dr. Joanna Tse. Tse Kwan-Ho, Academy trained veteran and among the most demanded actors for the local theatre stage, plays her husband, a former leukemia patient facing a relapse. Known for his powerful stage presence, Tse adapts amazingly well to the screen in this film, minimalising well in his portrayal of a shy, reserved, yet passionate man. Adding to the beauty of the film are two inspirational songs written in honor of Dr. Tse. While I have heard these two songs many times, Samantha Lam's interpretation in the film lifted them to a new height. As another tribute to Dr. Tse is a good reason for seeing this film. Purely on its own merits, however, The Miracle Box is also well worth seeing.
