  • Disjointed and Nauseating

    AlanTES2004-11-14

Frankie is a drugged out stripper with a drugged out boyfriend. One evening she and a male patron at her strip club collapse and she wakes up the next morning thinking she's a man with amnesia. She/he then tries to find this other mystery man to find out what has happened. It had the potential to be an adult themed, "Freaky Friday". However, the movie quickly devolves into numerous sordid scenes of gratuitous acts of sadism as Frankie begins to mutilate her boyfriend for no reason in particular, and the movie completely abandons the whole gender switch story. The director at a Q&A session at the Rehoboth Beach Film Festival said he was true to the book, to his credit. That has convinced me never to read the book.

  • Potential, but falls a little short

    mrzinke-12005-05-08

As the previous commentator noted, this movie starts off as a possibly adult (and interesting) version of 'Freaky Friday'. However, once the boyfriend loses his cool one night and rapes Frankie, the whole movie descends into a contest to make the audience squirm more and more, without much meaning. The point at which this event happens is roughly halfway into the movie, so it comes across feeling like two separate stories sewn together haphazardly. However, that could be a fault of the novel itself (which brings up the question of why to adapt it?) moreso than the movie. All is not lost, as there is a few notable performances by Thomas Jefferson Byrd as Marcus, and Melissa Murphy as Frankie. Melissa Murphy pulls off the intensity needed for her all over the place role, but is slightly uneven. Thomas Byrd is intriguing as Terry's good friend Marcus. If your into dark and twisted movies, you may want to see this. As long as your not expecting the overall story to make too much sense. Kudos to the makeup and effects artists also for Terry's 'Decorations of honor'.

  • A confusing and boring 90 minutes.

    sdmath2006-01-10

This movie is so unfocused and confusing that I tried to leave after 45 minutes. As previously noted, the plots of sex identity confusion and sadism is loosely, if at all, joined, and the images are disturbing apparently solely for the purpose of being disturbing. The acting is unfortunately sub-par and the screenplay fails to make any of the characters relatable. The story line is implausible, the dialogue forced and at times laughable, and the movie experience intolerable. I often find myself wondering why more art house/independent films don't find a wider release...and then I think about this movie and realize why.
